  • The Thor weather forecasting supercomputer acquired in May 2017 by Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., generates thunderstorm likelihood and potential, and compiles many other weather scenarios that could impact military operations.     Supercomputing the weather with ‘Thor’

    Thor models global weather patterns and provides individual air bases and army units with specific forecasts for areas as small as 17 square kilometers. The computer system is comprised of nearly 1,000 individual blade servers. Thor’s increased capacity allows weather Airmen at Offutt to generate initial conditions and process them. Locally produced baseline data, combined with Thor’s increased processing speed, results in forecasts reaching the warfighter in half the time. This gives forecasters and mission planners up to three extra hours to exploit forecasts.

    25th OWS ramps up operations for monsoon season

    From late June to late September, monsoon season not only brings with it heavy rains and severe thunderstorms, but also sends a surge of personnel from the 25th Operational Weather Squadron right to the unit’s operations hub. “It’s definitely a lot more busy,” said Airman 1st Class Cody Leahy, 25th OWS forecaster. “We issue a lot more watches, warnings and advisories for each zone.”

The Weather Camp is open to students entering grades 10 through 12 and is designed to give attendees insight into how scientists observe and forecast the weather as well as monitor the changing climate.The 557th Weather Wing is an Air Combat Command unit under 12th Air Force.
